I'm talking about a shark dive. It may sound outrageous and frightening at first, but there's a lot you can do to ensure a safe dive.

First, a scheduled shark dive will always be with a skilled and qualified crew. They will operate a boat with the appropriate equipment and amenities.

But don't just select a company at random. Be sure you do your research first.

Things to consider...
1. How long has the company been around? Has the company been in business only a few months, a few years or more? Experience tells you that the company probably has a plan in place for emergencies.

2. What's the company's reputation? Google works wonders for this. Do they have problems with keeping schedules? Do they have a good safety history?

3. Where do they operate and are they close! to assistance? Obviously if you're on vacation you'll probably want to go someplace you'll enjoy. You not only need to make sure they can operate near there, but that they also have a route to assistance if something should happen.

4. Is the crew qualified? Do they have solid experience? Are they first aid trained? Do they have qualified dive masters on board? Are they properly registered? Do they carry liability insurance or any other kind of bonding that may be needed in their area?

5. What kind of equipment do they operate? Most will operate a boat and a shark cage. How big is the cage and how old is it? What kind of facilities do they offer on board the boat? Do they offer enough wet suits to comfortably fit your party?

6. What kind of pictures do they allow? Some companies will handle videos for you, others will have a place where you can take some yourself. Make sure this matches your style. Spain, is a country that as has been mentioned on numerous occasions before is more than perhaps the sum of its constituent parts.

Organized faith has played such a dominant part in the history and culture of Spain down through the centuries and as a result there are numerous pilgrimage routes to be found throughout the country.

Of all of the pilgrimage routes possibly the most famous is the Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James. This first became a popular route for pilgrims in the ninth century when apparently the sepulchre of St James was discovered. The alleged last resting place of St. James the Apostle has been such an attraction that in the centuries following its discovery pilgrims from around the world have walked this particular pilgrimage route.

The popularity of this particular route it has to be said has risen! and fallen throughout the years. The 16th and 17th centuries probably saw the least interest in this particular route. Apparently was on the orders of one of the Popes of the day that prisoners serving time for petty misdemeanours could actually serve penance by taking part on a pilgrimage on the Way of St. James.

what possibly turned the fortunes of this particular pilgrimage route around was the fact that in the 20th century UNESCO after extensive lobbying finally recognized Santiago de Compostela as a World heritage site of some importance and the knock on benefit of this was increased visitor traffic and more pilgrims.

Nowadays the whole experience of travelling along the Way of St. James toward Santiago is more than just a mere religious pilgrimage though the importance of this has not declined but rather the entire event has become a major tourist attraction.

Many people have asked what are the most common starting off points for the Way of St ! James and it has to be said that probably the English, the Fre! nch and the Spanish routes are the most common. That having been said to be honest the most popular of all originates from the north of France right down through northern Spain to Santiago.

Nowadays unless you happen to be a completely devout, fervent and ardent pilgrim it is unlikely that you would travel the entire 760 common to route from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela. Those who do manage the entire route claim that the hardship and suffering that they go through stands him in good stead for being able to appreciate the whole experience once they get to Santiago.

There are numerous markers long the way to help ensure that pilgrims do not deviate more than is necessary from the original route and the most common of these signs and markers are the ubiquitous yellow arrows that are found painted on trees and rocks along the way. It is said that these were by and large painted in the 1970'S by Father Elias Valdinha who as well as wanting to improve the way als! o wanted to avoid more confusion than was necessary and also to ensure that all pilgrims arrived at their destination in good order as well as humour!

If you want something slightly different then most people would head for one of the various exclusive hotels throughout the region or one of the "Paradors" that can be found in various key places throughout the area. Throughout the region there are various mountain refuges with stunning views as well as campsites in the coastal areas.

The standard of accommodation in the area is extremely high as you would expect from Galicia and Northern Spain. Hotels are categorized and awarded stars by the regional tourist authorities. If you need actual visible proof of the standard of your hotel you can find confirmation indicated by a small blue plaque near the hotel front door.

You'll find in hotels that they have at least ! a shower in each room but more usually en suite bathrooms. You may well be surprised but it is unlikely that these sorts of facilities would be found in the smaller hostels and "Pensiones".

The cost of accommodation as in most cases varies from season to season therefore it is wise to plan in advance. A popular option available in all of the autonomous regions of northern Spain are hostels (hostales) and guest houses (pensiones) which are cheaper than hotels. These are usually small fam! ily-run establishments offering just a few beds.

This ! area of Northern Spain otherwise known as Green Spain claims to have a total of 92,000 beds registered over 1,500 Hotels, Hostels and "Pensiones".

The biggest hotel chains in northern Spain are the Grupo Sol-Melia and NH with hotels in the main towns. The standard of accommodation in these hotels is extremely high. Latterly there have been a growing number of smaller privately run hotels that offer memorable relaxing accommodation available.

Throughout Spain you'll find in key areas tourist accommodation known as Parador's. These are classified from between three to five stars. The first Parador opened in 1928 and there is now quite a comprehensive network throughout the country. They are located close together so that there is never more than a day's drive to the nearest one. The Parador de los Reyes Catolicos in Santiago de Compostela, located in a former royal hunting lodge is possibly the best known Parador in the area. Various monasteries, castles and other monume! nts have been used for Paradors elsewhere. Some Parador's have been purpose built often in spectacular scenery or in towns of historic interest.

The local Parador might not be best hotel in town but it will usually deliver a predictably consistent standard of comfort. The bedrooms are usually spacious and comfortable, and all furnished to a standard that varies little from Parador to Parador. Quite often you will find that they offer outstanding samples of regional cuisine. It might be wise to book in advance if you are planning to visit the area either during the high season or if you wish to stay in one of the smaller Paradors. You can either call each Parador direct or use the Central booking service based in Madrid called the Central de Reservas. You have to expect as in most cases that if you choose to travel during the high season accommodation can be on the expensive side but deals can be found if you're able to shop around.
